The passing of Justice Ginsburg is a monumental loss. While we grieve her passing, we must also grapple with the enormous political implications. If you find yourself reeling today, I urge you to channel your grief into action in a way that honors Justice Ginsburg’s legacy and would make her proud.
Write to your Senators
Here are some form letters you can use to let your Senators know where you stand.
Use this letter if your Senator is a Democrat:
Dear Senator ,
In the wake of Justice Ginsburg's passing, I urge you to stay strong in the fight against Senate republicans as they attempt to fill her seat. By their own standard, a Supreme Court vacancy should not be filled during an election year. With potentially millions of Americans casting their vote from home it would be a grave miscarriage of justice to allow Justice Ginsburg's seat to be filled in the middle of an election that has already begun.
Thank you for continuing to represent the best interests of your constituents.
Sincerely,
Use this letter if your Senator is a Republican:
Dear Senator ,
In the wake of Justice Ginsburg's passing, I urge you to abstain from any action to fill her seat this year. By the Republican party's own standard, a Supreme Court vacancy should not be filled during an election year. With potentially millions of Americans casting their vote from home it would be a grave miscarriage of justice to allow Justice Ginsburg's seat to be filled in the middle of an election that has already begun.
Thank you for continuing to represent the best interests of your constituents.
Sincerely,
Volunteer your time
I can’t overstate the importance of winning control of the Senate. A few hours spent making phone calls or sending text messages would be monumental in this fight. Here are the Senate candidates we’ve focused on so far if you want to donate your time to their campaigns:
Cal Cunningham, North Carolina
John Hickenlooper, Colorado
Sara Gideon, Maine
Jaime Harrison, South Carolina
Mark Kelly, Arizona
Theresa Greenfield, Iowa
Donate your dollars
Don’t just donate money. Be strategic and make every cent count! That’s been my goal with Flip It Friday: to specifically highlight races where our money will make the difference. Check out this article on “democracy moneyball” for more details on strategically funding campaigns (thanks to Barbara for that find!). Here are the ActBlue pages for the Senate candidates we’ve focused on so far if you want to help their campaigns with another contribution:
Cal Cunningham, North Carolina
John Hickenlooper, Colorado
Sara Gideon, Maine
Jaime Harrison, South Carolina
Mark Kelly, Arizona
Theresa Greenfield, Iowa
These are dark, difficult times. I’m not an optimistic type of person. But I know we can rise to this challenge and fight like hell together.
See you next Friday,
Claire
